I bought it.

I didn't buy it right - I should have at least pulled a valve cover or did a compression check before I paid - but it all looks pretty good.

Oh well. So I fiddled with it a bit yesterday, separated the trans from the motor - Like I said above - everything looks good.

Some good things I saw that makes me think this is a well cared for ~16k motor:
Mobil1 oil filter
dielectric grease used on spark plugs
New OEM GM motor mounts
Heads look really clean - but they were allegedly reworked.

Pulled a valve cover - all looks good. What are the yellow lines on the pushrods? Aftermarket? Pics below.

It has a Power Plate, and a heated o2. Are they worth running? I have a new Denso for the GN motor that's on the stand.

There's a pic of the fuel lines I trashed transporting the motor. :x.

Trans input shaft and what not looks good, there's evidence it was rebuilt (Clip retainer on front pump seal, etc)

I guess once it's on a stand, I can do a compression check, etc.

Driver's side header looks to be repaired with a large gusset. They took the time to reweld the heat shield back on.

we have discussed the value of the PP too many times to discuss it any further...

No, imo, on the heated o2 due to its reluctance to code properly.

What brand is the converter?  Art Carr?

Looks very well maintained.  You may have done very well on this buy

I was just stating what it has - I like RJC Power plates. :)

No, imo, on the heated o2 due to its reluctance to code properly.

That's what I thought. Going into the fast-growing SELL pile..

What brand is the converter?  Art Carr?

Precision Vigilante 3200 stall, single disc lock up, I was told about 3k miles on it.

Looks very well maintained.  You may have done very well on this buy

i am feeling better about it - but I am still kicking myself for not checking most of this BEFORE i forked over 2500.

thanks!

The trans is going in the 87 TR very soon - I drove it hard this weekend, the installed trans is on it's very last legs. It never shifted right since I owned it, and slipped alot - but it never bothered me as much as it does now..

Mark Martone rebuilt it - I think it was the first time - either way, I still love him. the boat I swapped with him for the car had a rotten transom I didn't know about - I think we're square. :p

I need to message him on Facebook - Good friend..

In my defense, I researched the guy selling it, he had a decent history of posts with this motor - and seems to have a high level of attention to detail.

Says he went 11:30 with this combo.

Has anyone heard of a trans shop called "JIMMY'S" out of Mundelein, IL?

Mark was a really nice guy.  Too bad he faded from the Buick scene.  The converter looks just like my three clutch version which was from AC, but, at the time, aC and Precision were owned by the same company and were both building the converters.  Same color as mine so I guessed AC.

Think that converter was going for about $850 at the time, but, I might be wrong.

Think your money was well spent if nothing other than the tranny works...you know what a tranny job costs

If Jimmy built it, it is a damn good tranny.  His rep is outstanding and has been for many years.

Bout what I said I thought it cost.
